Missions | Liberia

[Information provided by Helen Roberts-Evans, Director, Department of General Education and Ministry, UMC in Liberia]

 Find Helen's presentation materials HERE

Liberia is still recovering from the effects of civil war. The process of rebuilding the social and economic structure of the country is difficult, and statistics indicate that about 85% of the population live on less than US$1.25 a day.

Prior to the end of the civil war, the United Methodist School System had 142 schools throughout Liberia. During the 2011/2012 school year there were 80 functioning United Methodist Schools in 13 of Liberia's 15 counties. These schools include 45 elementary schools (Kindergarten through 6th grade), 19 junior high schools (Kindergarten through 9th grade), 15 senior high schools (Kindergarten through 12th grade) and College of West Africa (10th through 12th grade).

The Department of General Education & Ministry is always a busy place. We are the department that:

  • Reports to and consults with the Board of General Education of the Liberia Annual Conference

  • Collects statistics from the schools and reports to the Liberia Annual Conference

  • Acts as the liaison between the Bishop, the Board of General Education, the Ministry of Education for the Republic of Liberia and other ministries and agencies
  • Monitors United Methodist Schools, plans teacher training workshops and distributes textbooks, school supplies and building materials
  • Works with the Scholarship Committee to administer scholarships for the Liberia Annual Conference.

Scholarships are given to active members of United Methodist Churches through The Advance for Scholarships for Elementary, Secondary, College and Seminary Education. We are also looking for other sources of support for our students.
